Why visit Port Stephens?

Why visit Port Stephens?

We have the best walks in NSW! Everyone will tell you the same thing; Tomaree Head Summit walk will take some effort, but it is worth every single step!

One of the most popular natural attractions in Port Stephens is the magnificent Tomaree National Park. But the 2.2 km return walk to Tomaree Head Summit is something special and is NOT to be missed on any visit to Port Stephens.

The entrance to the walk is at the far end of Shoal Bay and it is a steep one-kilometre walk up to the summit.

The start of the walk will test your aerobic fitness and leg muscles, however, there are benches positioned along the way if you need a rest.

As you hike further up the track, you’ll enjoy unparalleled views of idyllic Port Stephens and its coastline. There’s a picnic table at the lookout, so if you have time, take a picnic lunch or some morning tea to enjoy as you take in the view.

Reaching the summit, 161 metres above the entrance to Port Stephens you will enjoy panoramic views of Yacaaba Head, Cabbage Tree, Boondelbah and Broughton Islands from the north platform. From the south platform, views of Zenith, Wreck and Box Beaches, Fingal Island and Point Stephens Lighthouse.

As you make your way up Tomaree Head Summit, take in all that surrounds you with unique native animals and flora all around. Don’t be surprised to look up and see a koala in the gum trees or the magnificent white-bellied sea eagle while on the ground keep an eye out for the old man banksia, smooth-barked apple gums and the grass tree.

The track at a glance:

  • 90 – 120 minutes return journey
  • 2.2 km round trip
  • Take care along the steep sections on this walk as well as paved areas that can become slippery when wet.
  • Wear sturdy footwear
  • Pack a picnic for when you reach the top
  • Remember to take your binoculars for whale watching – the best time to spot them is between May and October
  • Zenith Beach is a sanctuary zone, meaning no collecting or fishing is permitted
  • TAKE YOUR CAMERA and WATER!

The walk may be hard on the legs but it’s good for your body, heart and soul and is the only way to experience the absolute beauty of nature that is Port Stephens.

Tomaree National Park is located a short walk, or quick drive from many of our Port Stephens Accommodation properties. To secure your accommodation, visit our website to see the hundreds of options we have available
